How To Create A New Life In 2008

How focused are you at truly changing your life in 2008?

Most of us seem to focus on the wrong thing. We focus on changing our lifestyle without realizing it’s our life that we need to change.

Now, before you get all freaked, this is not one of those “get-rich-quick, pump me up and tell me to talk and think positive and my life will change” blog post.

This is just a simple, from the heart message that I feel compelled to share as we move into 2008.

For most of us this time of year brings two things to mind.

First we start to reflect on the past 12 months.

Second we start to think about what new resolutions we’ll have for the New Year.

Reflection is great. It allows us to see where we have come from or in some cases what we have come through. Yet, for the most part, none of us seem to journal our lives in writing on a regular basis. So by the time the end of the year comes along we’ve forgotten most of what has happened to us good or bad.

So it isn’t a surprise that 60-90 days into the New Year we seem to have forgotten or misplaced our resolutions. Or worse yet we remember them because they have been the same ones for the last 20 years.

The sad fact is resolutions, like goals are not worth the paper we write them on!

Bet that I have your attention, let me explain. No, first let me ask a few questions.

When you found your soul mate, that person you knew your heart belonged, did you find them after writing down some goal or resolution?

When you decided on your current career path, was it because you wrote down some goal?

Or how about when you decided to have kids, did you write down some grand resolution or descriptive goal explaining what type of kids you would have, how they would grow up and the type of attitude they would share with the world?

I’ll bet the answer to all of these is NO!

Hang with me for a second, and let’s take this a step further. Think about these three questions. What did you think about and what have you personally done to you created the life you now enjoy?

Don’t hurry, take your time and give this some serious thought.

Let me give you some personal perspective, it might help you to better understand what I mean.

I remember when and why I joined the Marines. I even remember exactly where I was at when I made the decision. It was not because I had written some goal or resolution. It was for two very clear reasons.

The first reason was because my parent’s did not (according to them) have the money for me to enter college, and since it was 1982, I was 17 and the USA was just coming out of a recession, I could not find a job.

Second, and more importantly, Paige’s brother was a Marine and she LOVED him. I figured if I join the Marines she would LOVE me too. (by the way, there are easier ways to get a girl to love you.)

It had nothing to do with goals or resolutions.

By the way I was relaxing on the couch downstairs in our family room watching the dancing flames of the fire as they leaped up into the chimney when I decided “tomorrow I will join the Marines.” That was a Friday night. Saturday morning my dad took me to the recruiting station I signed the papers and a week later this 17 year old wet behind the ears, long haired country boy was on a plane to Boot camp. And that one decision was the catalyst that changed me from a boy into the making of a leader.

Now, let’s take this train of thought a little further. The U.S. Marines are known throughout the world, not as much for their fighting abilities, as they are for the leaders they have created throughout history. Currently 50% of the Fortune 500 CEOs are former marines. Yet, not once in any of our leadership, management, tactical training, statistic planning or just everyday grunt training were we taught to write down goals or make resolutions.

Instead we were trained to focus on the overall mission, and create a Plan of Action for reaching our objectives.

The same rings true in every area of our life here in the civilian world.

Even for those of you who went to college, your goal was not to JUST get to college, even though you probably stated “my goal is to get to college.” Think about it, if that was your goal, what would you have done when you got there? (Please don’t answer that question if Animal House is your favorite movie.)

What you were focused on was graduating with a degree that would help propel you forward in your chosen career or profession. So you worked with your counselors and professors to create an action plan with set objectives to get you from freshman to senior with a passing grade. This plan included specific classes, apprentice programs, and maybe even intern positions as you moved towards your final objective.

So why in the world have we gotten so caught up in the non-productive ritual of goal setting and making resolutions?

Let’s agree together to STOP this unproductive behavior and take control of changing our lives.

Here are some basic steps that we can accomplish in order to create our new Life Blueprint. A Blueprint that will give us the foundation we need for a Total Life Makeover.

Reflect – Take some time to reflect over the last 12 months of your life. Focus in these four major areas; Spiritual, Health, Relationships, and Financial/Career; if you saw your relationship with your spouse or kids grow stronger in 2007 write that down as an asset in your life. On the other hand if you saw your income go down, or your career take a downward turn, write that down as a liability that you need to work on.

Create – the objectives you want to accomplish in 2008. Use your reflection assets and liabilities as the basis for your objectives. I know that in my life this year I want to increase my charity giving 50%. I also know I want to completely wipeout all of our debt including what we have left owing on our home. So once we have our list of objectives we now need to create our action plan to accomplish these objectives. If I want to increase my giving 50% I will create a plan to increase my monthly income. Since I want to pay off all my debt, then I will change my monthly spending plan.

Your plan must be broken into three major steps. First will be daily actions, second will be quarterly benchmarks, and thirdly annual milestones.

Keep a Daily Journal – This is so important! Write down everything, both positive and negative that happens each day in every area of your life. Don’t get caught up in the current fad of “not speaking or thinking anything negative.” You have to be realistic and learn from everything that happens in your life. Just don’t dwell on where you are at, stay focused on where you are going.

This small daily action will allow you to see and feel what you were going through each time you reflex and read back through your journal. Plus at the end of the year you’ll remember the whole picture.

Find an Accountability Partner – This can be your spouse, business partner, kids or anyone else you trust, and who will be honest and keep you on track. You are not looking for a fan club! You want someone who will brainstorm with you, tell you when you have a nasty attitude and who will review your plan on a regular basis to make sure you are moving forward.

Create a Total Life Makeover Journal – This was one of the most exciting things Paige and I have ever done together. It is a record of your dreams in Picture form. It will be your living example of what you want your life to look like when you reach your objectives.

Paige and I started ours in 1990 after our first trip to Destin. We both fell in love with the city and decided this is where we want to raise our kids. So we would snap pictures, find post cards, cut our pictures from brochures or whatever we needed to do to paint the picture we were dreaming of. Then we would write down under each picture a descriptive explanation of what it would represent.

I remember one of the pictures I had cut out was of an office building where I would work. Although I ended up working in a different office building, when I read the description of what my office would look like, I was able to create it when the day came. And in the end my office was better than I dreamed. In my description I had to drive for 30 minutes to the office, and it was on the harbor. In reality my office was 30 seconds from my house. I had an 8’x 8’ TV projection system that worked as both a TV and my computer screen. I had my own private full bath, and had room to hold team meeting with 10 members at a time. I have found that Dreams are always better when they become reality!

Take your time and create YOUR Total Life Makeover Journal. Include your kid’s schools, cars, retirement accounts, homes, and vacations, anything you want. This is your journal.

It took us 10 years to see some of the things we wrote about in our journal to come true. But no matter what life threw at us, we would always go back to our journal and keep our focus. And, let me tell you life threw us a ball park full of curve balls.

From the time we decided wanted to live on the Island where Destin is located it seemed like one thing after another happened. We watched our net worth go from seven figures (twice) to bankruptcy. Tessa was diagnosed with a birth defect between her kidneys and bladder that caused some very scary times and eventually lead to pediatric kidney surgery (not cheap), personal and legal issues involving several family members; the loss of a major business due to embezzlement and fraud of one of our partners. And several other life changing issues, but none of these kept us from keeping our eyes on the main objectives.

We still add to our journal, and have taken it a step further. We now drive at least three times a week to down the beach to the small beach community where we plant o build our dream home. We take pictures, walk through the homes, and even take time to walk down the pebble cover paths to the boat dock to enjoy the water and to get a living feeling of what it will be like. And to top it all off they just opened a new starbucks which sure made my day.

This is why it is so important that you create your own personal Total Life Makeover Journal.

By the way for those of you who might think I am nuts. And, you might be thinking

“Troy this goes against all I have been taught. Why I have even heard that Harvard or was it Yale did a study on goal setting that proves you are wrong!”

Well, I use to believe the same thing. Until one day I decided to do some deep soul searching and went on a quest to find some answers. Guess what? There has never been a study by Yale or Harvard. Now don’t take my word for it. Check it out yourself. Here is a great starting point for you http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/06/cdu.html.

I truly believe 2008 is going to be a great year for all us who take the time to create our Life blueprint. Take time in the next few days to get your plan of action started.

Feel free to send me any comments – pros or con on what I have written. Together we’ll all grow from sharpening each other.

Here are two great resources to get you off on the right track.

Deciphering The Law Of Attraction The Science Behind The Hype

WOW! Yesterday’s post brought some great comments, and even greater questions.

It seems several of us have some of the same questions. One that kept coming up over and over is “Why haven’t I heard of this Science of “LOA” before now?

With that question in mind I thought I would take a few minutes today as I sip my tea and listen to it rain here on the island to share a little history on the “Science of the Law of Attraction” and where it came from.

First let’s take a look at the definition of “Science.”

According to Dictionary.com (v1.1) Sci-ence – noun: A branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws: the mathematical sciences.

And if we want to take it a step further we can look at the definition of “Social Science.”

Again let’s look at Dictionary.com.

American Heritage Dictionary: Social Science – n. 1. The study of human society and of individual relationships in and to society. 2. A scholarly or scientific discipline that deals with such study, generally regarded as including sociology, psychology, anthropology, economics, political science, and history.

Now, before we move on let’s take a look at one last definition found on Wikipedia.

“Science in the broadest sense refers to any system of “objective” knowledge. In a more restricted sense, science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge based on the scientific method, as well as to the organized body of knowledge humans have gained by such research.

Now the reason I want to reference Science is because in most of the current articles, studies, and teachings of “Law of Attraction”, it is being referred to as a “Science.” The reality that I will disclose below at best would make it a “Theory.”

So where and when did “Law of Attraction” come on to the scene?

In 1986 Esther Hicks “purported to connect with a source called “Abraham” who gave her the revelation of “Law of Attraction”.

She was seen in the original “The Secret” DVD, but has since been edited out, do to the fact she would not give up control and rights to the Original teaching of “LOA.”

Most of the current teachers of “Law of Attraction” are former NPL (Nero-Linguistic Programmers.) Although NLP has been used for years by the CIA, Military Intelligence, and Psychologists/Psychiatrists. In the 80’s it was brought to the Self-Help world by Anthony Robbins, and has been the backbone of most modern sales training ever since.

But, let’s get back to the root source of “LOA (Law of Attraction.) According to all of the LOA sites I reviewed over the last week or so, all of them including the official Abraham-Hicks site shows that the origin of the source and its message is anything but science and goes against the very core of what we are taught in the Bible.

Those who teach the Law of Attraction tell us that everything in our universe is fundamentally a vibration from the physical to the mental domain. Our own thoughts and emotions are vibrations and will attract like vibrations. In other words, we create our own reality and receive exactly what we to be true.

If you do your own research you will find those who teach and practice LOA also believe we are co-creators of the universe and live multiple lives; Now that in itself goes against the essentials of Orthodox Christianity.

Genesis 1:1 (NKJ) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

John 1:1 (Amplified) In the beginning [before all time] was the word (Christ), and the word was with God, and the Word was God Himself.

I John 1:1 (Amplified) [We are writing] about the Word of life [in] Him Who existed from the beginning, Whom we have heard, Whom we have seen with our [own] eyes, Whom we have gazed upon [for ourselves] and have touched with our [own] hands.

Nowhere does the Bible teach or even suggest that we are co-creators!

So who or what is “Abraham, who first gave the LOA to Esther Hicks?

Well again according to the official web site:

“Workshop attendee”… “You’re a very attractive woman, too.”

“Abraham” “We’re usually a nebulous mist, so that is quite a compliment.”

New Age Teacher Dr. Wayne Dyer calls them “The great Masters of the Universe.”

Through Esther Hicks, Abraham have described themselves as “a group consciousness from the non-physical dimension”

So with that in mind ask yourself how does this fit with my personal beliefs and values based on Biblical principles and precepts?

Let’s take a look at what the Bible teaches and more specifically what Jesus taught us.

In Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (NKJ) King Solomon wrote some powerful words (and Bob Dillon made them famous.) He wrote:

“To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under the sun: A time to be born, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, a time to sew; a time to keep silence, a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, a time for peace.”

We can see here that it is natural for us to take actions that are going to produce both positive and negative emotions. However, if we were to do a study on this passage we would also see the God controls the seasons of our life. If we keep our focus on the purpose He created us, we will not be unsatisfied.

Those who teach Law of Attraction state that we control and create our own reality including our life after we leave our current manifestation of energy. However we see in the Bible a different reality. One that guarantees we live forever in happiness if we trust completely in Jesus Christ and not in ourselves. One that has stood the test of time, and all the critics for over 6000 years; One that has more documentation to back it up than any other book ever written; One that has a 99.9% accuracy. (Don’t take my word for it, check it out yourself. Do a Google search.)

Here’s something else we see in the Word, that contradicts the Law of Attraction.

In John 3:16-17 (The Message) This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, His one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in Him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending His Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in Him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust Him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And, why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to Him.

See the one thing LAO does seem to get right is we will live forever! However, the question is… Will we live in eternal happiness or eternal un-happiness?

Look at what John 3:31-36 has to say.

John 31-33 (The Message) “The One who comes from above is head and shoulders over other messengers from God. The earthborn is earthbound and speaks earth language; the heavenborn is in a league of his own. He sets out the evidence of what he saw and heard in heaven. No one wants to deal with these facts. But anyone who examines this evidence will come to stake his life on this: that God himself is the truth. “The One that God sent speaks God’s words. And don’t think he rations out the Spirit in bits and pieces. The Father loves the Son extravagantly. He turned everything over to him so he could give it away—a lavish distribution of gifts. That is why whoever accepts and trusts the Son gets in on everything, life complete and forever! And that is also why the person who avoids and distrusts the Son is in the dark and doesn’t see life.
All he experiences of God is darkness, and an angry darkness at that.”

Take time to dig deep in your own heart and see if any of this hits home.

Please don’t hesitate to post your comments, questions or disagreement in my opinion.

Decyphering The Law Of Attraction Is It A Secret

Over the last twelve to eighteen months we’ve all heard a lot about the “Law of Attraction.”

Last year “The Secret” movie hit the Internet like a heat wave, and is selling like wildfire inside the network marketing community. Its main theme is to promote that the “Law of Attraction” (LOA) has been kept “Secret” from the average common folks throughout history.

Since it piggybacked on the #1 best seller “The De Vinci Code”, and much anticipated release of “The De Vinci Code” movie people ate it up.

I mean let’s be honest we all love a great conspiracy theory, and that is what both of these movies brought us.

But, like the De Vinci Code, there is a whole lot more fiction that fact in the concept of the “Law of Attraction.”

For some this might be seen just plain Politically Incorrect. Let me say in advance it’s cool if you disagree with me on this subject. If you do I challenge you to send me your responses or at the very least post a comment. Don’t just disagree and not be willing to stand up for what you do believe in!

“Law of Attraction”… what is it, and does it work? If we take a look we can see that the New Age community’s theory of “Law of Attrition” is similar to the Christian Community’s “Name It & Claim It” doctrine.

What I find most interesting is the fact the “Law of Attraction” trainers teach that LOA has been kept a secret from the common folks by the Church, Governments, Corporations, and Power Brokers throughout history. Yet, when we do a study on the “Name It & Claim It” crowd we see that they have been preaching this same message with a little different twist for about as long as the New Age community; making it available since the 19th century.

So what is it about the “Law of Attraction” that makes it so freaky and against what Jesus taught?

Why is it people seem to be looking for anything but the Bible for answers on living life, seeking their fortunes, and changing their lifestyles?

To find the answers to these questions we first need to understand a few things.

First we need to understand what the “New Age Movement” and “New Thought Philosophy” is all about. Both have their roots based here in the USA and started springing up in the 19th century. Although the New Age movement does make up a cross demographic group, we do know that 20% of Americans now hold to a New Age Belief. The basic thought behind this community is each of us has full and total control over our ultimate destiny. We just have to work with the powers or laws of the universe.

Ok, now let’s get into the main topic “Law of Attraction.”

The foundation of Law of Attraction is based in what some of us know as “Positive Thinking or in the words of the leaders of the teaching “This law states that you attractwhatever you put your attention to.” So does this hold up under scrutiny?

First let’s take a look at the Law of Attraction using Aristotle’s “First Principles.” In Aristotle’s essays called “Organon” he established the difference between valid and invalid forms of human reasoning. He showed how every science begins with certain obvious truths. In short “First Principles are the fundamental truths from which inferences are made and on which conclusions are based.

Using First Principles as our guide, and focusing on the First Principle known as Logic, we can see that the Law of Attraction does not come to a logical conclusion.

If the law of attraction were true, then the logical conclusion we would come to is that; “The entire human race has and does attract everything that happens to us, because we are putting our attention to what we are attracting from the time of conception until the time we decide to attract death to our doorstep” However in answering the questions below we can see that is not true.

So let’s ask the following questions:

Does the child who is being molested, attracting that type of negative behavior because they were focusing on being molested?
Does the person, who does not believe in war, attract the war in which they now find themselves fighting?
Does the mother who just miscarriages her baby do so because she attracted it to herself.
Does the baby born with a hole in their heart attract the hole because of some negative through they have?
Does a child born with Aids attract this horrible disease because while in the womb?
Does the person who is maimed or killed by a drunk driver attracting this type of event in their life because they are advocates for “Mothers Against Drunk Drivers?”
Does a person who teaches and preaches against the perils of drug abuse and promiscuous sex attracting his wife to have an affair, or his kids to die of a drug overdose?
Did all the people who lived on the Gulf of Mexico in 2005 attract the devastation of the hurricanes and floods that killed thousands, and uprooted millions?

Now, I could go on and on with situations that go beyond the ability of the person in which they are happening.

Do our thoughts, beliefs and actions affect the way we see our world? Yes!

However, for the most part those thoughts and beliefs have been programmed into us throughout our life based on our environment, upbringing, and our own chosen value system; and they can and do change based on our continual personal and spiritual growth. Yet, there are some things we just can’t change in our lives, and which the Law of Attraction can’t change.

Let’s say I was born without the ability to reason, there is nothing the Law of Attraction or any of the New Age “Universal Laws” can do to prevent or change the outcome of this event in my life.

So, in using the First Principle of Logic we can see that the Law of Attraction does not come to a logic conclusion. Not everything that happens to us is attracted to us because something we have done to attract it.

In the “Name It & Claim It” community we see the same thing. However, they tell us “it must be because we either have enough or not enough faith.” Yet we can see in the Bible in Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

Jesus taught us in Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask and it will be given to you, Seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks the door will be opened.”

If we take the three words Ask, Seek, Knock, we can see real quick that Jesus is not telling us to sit around wishing for what we want to attract. Instead He is teaching us to put into action a daily pattern which will allow us to move towards the purpose He has for us. And in reading Matthew 7:12 we can see the “Secret” to getting what we ask, seek and knock for is given to us has been available for everyone who would search for it.

Matthew 7:12 – So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law of the Prophets.”

And yes, there will still be times in our lives where we don’t fully understand why something is happening to us. Yet we can rest assured that if we are living in and seeking the purpose in which God created us, then we will see the positive results somewhere in our future as long as we keep our attitude focused on the big picture and search for the answers.

So we must do what the Ancient Hebrews called “discovering our Chazown (KaZonw)!” We must find our purpose, our vision or revelation. When we do, then our life will start moving forward, and our whole being will change. It starts with changing our limiting beliefs, attitudes and most of all our actions. It has nothing to do with sitting around “wishing our way” into a change!

My pastor Eric Partin is teaching a wonderful study on this very subject. I challenge anyone reading this to listen closely to his teachings and see for yourself what a God Size Vision can do in your life.

Never Give Up,

Troy
