Explore the World of Truth Telling

Arrogant Couple

Many entrepreneurs see themselves as defenders of their truth. They stand firm against critics, watchdogs, regulators, and the media.

Many of us are so arrogant in believing “we are right” that we have never paused to ask: Are we even seeking truth anymore? Perhaps we are afraid of change or being left behind!

When we hear critics, watchdogs, and regulators attack our industry, we tend to defend ourselves instead of listening even when we acknowledge that what they’re saying has some merit. When regulators target a company, we immediately shout “regulatory overreach.” What we often do is turn to our own group, seeking confirmation bias instead of striving to understand. For instance, this arrogance has led to a historical low in consumer sentiment regarding MLM.

It’s worth asking why we are so confident that “they” are wrong and “we” are right.

If you are reading this article, you probably agree that any home-based, freelance, side gig opportunity is far better than simply working for someone else. If we agree, why are we willing to risk becoming entrepreneurs by turning a blind eye to facts? The one constant in life is change! Laws change, consumer sentiment shifts, and you have changed! And if we’re unwilling to embrace change, then we won’t survive!

So, how do you figure it out to ensure your business has the best chance to thrive?

Pay attention to the everyday concerns of critics, watchdogs, and regulators, then review your business practices.

Engage a rebel like me who can keep you on the right side of the law!

Of all the situations I have encountered involving PR or regulators, 96% could have been managed away from the public eye without regulatory interference or negative PR. All it would have required is my clients’ arrogance to decrease just a few notches. My mentor, Tim Sanders, Yahoo’s former Chief Solutions Officer, has always told me, “Love is the Killer App!” The humble and loving person—not the most arrogant and snarky— wins hearts—the hearts of the critics, watchdogs, regulators, and, most importantly, the consumers.

I’m pointing this out because humility doesn’t come easily—not for men or women in sales and marketing. We are a unique group who don’t take just one no for an answer. We learn all the techniques when it comes to prospecting, presenting, and closing. Yet today, in a PTE (Post Trust Era), we MUST slow down and reevaluate our business practices. We can no longer afford to say, “This is how we have always done it!”
