Influencer Marketing

The influencer marketing industry faces significant challenges. It often seems disorganized, lacking professional standards and consistent consequences for unfair behavior. My experience over the past couple of decades has revealed conflicting elements within the industry. It serves as a platform for entrepreneurship and exploitation, connection and harassment, truth and falsehood, self-expression, and harm while encountering new ideas and finding comfort in the familiar biases.

THE CHALLENGE
Influencer marketing involves collaborating with individuals who have an engaged social media following. This can take place in social communities, podcasts, blogs, or other platforms where they promote products and services. This form of marketing can significantly affect society, both positively and negatively. When influencers, brands, and social media companies engage in misleading practices, it can undermine trust and have far-reaching consequences for an industry that depends on credibility and authenticity.

THE CAUSE
The industry’s current state reveals a lack of cohesion among professionals, resulting in inconsistent consequences for unfair play. This highlights the urgent need for sweeping changes to tackle these issues and foster fairness and accountability.

THE SOLUTION
In marketing, communication professionals must form teams of reliable individuals who can collaborate effectively and proactively. Quality and integrity should take precedence since long-lasting impact and trust are built on these principles. Furthermore, it’s essential to establish a trade association to provide a protective framework for influencers, companies, and consumers, ensuring accountability and ethical practices within the industry.

As an O.G. (Original Gangster) in influencer marketing, I have witnessed its evolution from a small group of influencers to the content creator economy we recognize today. We saw it explode as we emerged from the pandemic era at the start of this decade. It has fundamentally transformed how information and culture are created, promoted, and shared. Entertainment, beauty, travel, health, wellness, nonprofits, government agencies, political campaigns, regulatory bodies, and independent consumer advocacy groups have all adopted authentic communication through influencer marketing.

Influencer marketing has proven to be highly successful. According to Influencer Marketing Hub, by the end of 2023, the global industry was valued at approximately $21 billion. Surveys conducted by the Keller Advisory Group and Adobe revealed that 27 million Americans and 300 million people worldwide identify as content creators or influencers. HubSpot reported that nearly 88% of companies experimenting with influencer marketing intend to increase or maintain their spending.

Imagining anyone or any group untouched by social media influencers isn’t easy today. Research from Nielsen, Reuters, and others shows that people trust influencers, rely on them for news, and believe that brands can tackle social issues better than governments. Also, many young individuals aim to become influencers as their top career choice.

The industry is at a crucial point. Brands, marketers, influencers, and social media companies are responsible for shaping a future that prioritizes, incentivizes, and protects buyers, sellers, and influencers. It’s essential to ensure that unethical behavior is penalized. Creators should have the same rights and protections as other professional marketers. If you are looking to grow your Main Street business or side gig, then influencer marketing is something you should explore.
