I’m Jeff Welch, standing here on my family homestead in the heart of the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. It’s a rainy day, but I’ve found a brief window between showers to share a message that’s been on my heart. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of God’s creation, I want to reflect on the power of friendship, the pursuit of a quiet life, and the faith that anchors me. Today, I’m giving a special shout-out to my dear friend, Troy Dooly, and sharing how his presence in my life, alongside the wisdom of scripture, has shaped my journey.
A Brother Who Stands By Me
Troy, who lives in what I call “paradise” near Destin, Florida, is more than just a friend—he’s like a brother. We’ve walked through so much together and apart, yet our lives seem to run on parallel tracks. We’ve faced similar challenges, shared similar triumphs, and found ourselves leaning on each other through it all. “It’s almost as if we’re living each other’s lives in so many different ways,” I often think.
A year ago, I faced a moment that shook me to my core. Just 50 feet from where I stand now, I came home to find that my soulmate, the love of my life, had taken her own life. In that moment of unimaginable grief, Troy was one of the first people I called. He was there for me, a steady presence I could depend on. And he still is—whether we’re navigating life’s ups and downs or collaborating in business. Having a friend like Troy, someone I can trust and confide in, has been a lifeline.
From the Stage to the Homestead
You may know me from my days in a three-piece suit, speaking on stages worldwide in the network marketing and direct sales world. But if you saw me today—beard grown out, hair long, wearing overalls—you might wonder, “What happened to Jeff? Has he fallen off the deep end?” Let me assure you, I haven’t. I’ve simply found peace in a simpler life here on my homestead, surrounded by the tranquility of the Smoky Mountains. This shift isn’t about giving up; it’s about rediscovering what matters most.
The beauty of these mountains, the quiet of this land—it’s given me a new perspective. I’ve traded the spotlight for the stillness of nature, and in that stillness, I’ve found a deeper connection to my faith and purpose.
The Call to a Quiet Life
One of the things that grounds me is a passage from 1st Thessalonians 4, marked in my Bible with a special bookmark given to me by my friend, country music star Jimmy Wayne. In this passage, the Apostle Paul urges the Thessalonians to “aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands.” These words hit home for me. They speak to the ambition I now hold—not for fame or wealth, but for peace, purpose, and a life free from drama.
Paul’s words also call us to “increase more and more,” to prosper in a way that provides for our families and communities. This is a passion I share with Troy. For years, we’ve worked to teach others how to find stability and success, especially through entrepreneurship. Troy has an incredible gift for guiding people in “Main Street” businesses—mom-and-pop shops, family enterprises, and entrepreneurial ventures. He’s helped so many, including his own family, build lives of purpose and provision.
Choosing Peace Over Drama
Troy and I often talk about how easy it is to get caught up in life’s drama. But as Paul’s words remind us, those on the right path seek a quiet life. They seek tranquility, not chaos. For years, I lived a high-energy, charismatic life, driven by passion and ambition. There’s nothing wrong with that fire, but I’ve learned that true wealth isn’t measured by bank accounts—it’s found in the peace we cultivate in our faith, our relationships, and our families.
I believe the Bible is the greatest book ever written. It’s a love story between God and humanity, a leadership manual, and a guide for building meaningful relationships. It’s taught me the value of having someone like Troy in my life—someone who doesn’t just talk but listens, someone who has my back through thick and thin.
